Thoughts on Competitions

Physics competitions and contests can be a great way to stretch your mind, get yourself out of your comfort zone, and see what you can do with physics on your own. I am happy to coach students for the University Physics Competition and CAP Lloyd G. Elliott University Prize Exam. These are two very different contests: the first is a team competition working on an open-ended, freeform problem, and the second is an individual test composed of about 10 advanced problems. If you're trying to decide whether to participate, I recommend reading the UPC's "Top Ten Reasons," which could really apply to any contest.
